Baptism for the dead
Objection
Baptism for the dead appears in the Bible.
What is true
1 Corinthians 15 mentions a practice involving baptism for the dead.
Why it is not enough
That single reference does not establish the full LDS temple system, priesthood keys, and exaltation structure.
Key question: Where does the apostolic church teach the LDS temple system?
The verse is real but narrow
First Corinthians 15:29 should not be ignored. Paul mentions baptism for the dead while arguing for bodily resurrection.
But the verse is brief and unexplained. It does not command the practice, define it as a temple ordinance, connect it to priesthood keys, or make it part of a system of exaltation.
LDS practice depends on more than the verse
Official LDS teaching places proxy ordinances inside a restored temple and priesthood system. That larger system is the real issue.
A passing Pauline reference cannot by itself establish modern temple proxy baptism, endowment, sealing, and salvation for the dead as apostolic Christianity.
Primary references
These are the public sources behind the answer, with LDS doctrine cited from LDS material where possible.
