Father, Son, and Spirit in Scripture

The Trinity does not deny distinction. It denies that the distinct persons are three separate divine beings.

Triadic texts belong with monotheism #

Matthew 28 gives one baptismal name for Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Acts 5 treats the Spirit as God. John 14-16 distinguishes Father, Son, and Spirit in divine work.

These passages must be read with Isaiah's one God and John's divine Word. They do not support three separate gods united by purpose.

Distinction is not the LDS conclusion #

Jesus' baptism, His prayers, and His teaching about the Spirit all show real distinction. Trinitarian Christianity already teaches that Father, Son, and Spirit are not the same person.

The disputed move is from distinct persons to separate divine beings. LDS doctrine makes that move. The New Testament gives distinction while preserving the one God of Israel.

The Spirit completes the pressure #

If the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is treated as God, then Christian monotheism requires a doctrine deeper than unity of purpose among three divine beings.

The Trinity is the Christian answer to that pressure. It holds together everything Scripture says without turning the Godhead into a council of Gods.

Passage Biblical claim Use in the case
Matthew 28 Baptism is into one name of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Triadic language belongs with one divine name, not three unrelated beings.
Acts 5 Lying to the Holy Ghost is lying to God. The Spirit is treated as divine, not merely an impersonal influence.
John 1 The Word was God, and all things were made by Him. If all created things came through Christ, Christ is not inside the created order.
