Christ promised church continuity
Warnings about false teachers are real. They do not equal a total disappearance of Christ's church and priesthood authority.
The promise matters #
Matthew 16 says the gates of hell will not prevail against Christ's church. Matthew 28 says Christ will be with His disciple-making people to the end.
A centuries-long loss of essential authority does not naturally fit those promises.
Warnings are not disappearance #
The New Testament warns about false teachers, wolves, loveless churches, and people who depart from the faith. Christians should take those warnings seriously.
But a warning that churches can be corrupted is not a prophecy that Christ's church, gospel, and priesthood authority would vanish from the earth for centuries.
The restoration claim is the dividing line #
LDS teaching says priesthood authority was withdrawn and restored through Joseph Smith. That does not simply correct abuses or renew Christian life. It says Christian churches lacked essential authority.
So the choice is direct: either Christ preserved His church as He promised, or the LDS restoration was needed because Christianity lost what made it Christ's authorized church.
| Passage | Biblical claim | Use in the case |
|---|---|---|
| Matthew 16 | The gates of hell will not prevail against Christ's church. | This challenges total priesthood loss and restoration as a restart. |
